This web site is devoted to helping the thousands of lost, found, and stray animals that roam our streets each day. With your help, we hope to unite as many lost pets as possible. Spot a stray provides you with an easy way to help these animals and their owners. Members are encouraged to make 5 copies of the poster to post in public areas. Any report of a lost pet sighting or related information is immediately relayed to the member by the helpmefindMYPET emergency call center. When the pet is recovered, helpmefindMYPET is contacted via the emergency hotline or through helpmefindMYPET.com An urgent message is then placed in the member’s mailbox and the member is called directly by helpmefindMYPET. Arrangements are then made to reunite the pet and the family.

Don’t be discouraged Many animals who have been lost for months have been reunited with their owners. If someone in your community has stolen your pet, the thief expects you to give up after the initial search effort – they rely upon it! They expect the recovery advertising and “pressure” to subside over time – don’t let it. Successful recovery often takes time, and almost always takes hard work and perseverance.Advertise, Advertise, Advertise! Post fliers at grocery stores, community centers, veterinary offices, traffic intersections, and other locations. Staying within the limits of the law, post as many fliers as your budget will allow. Include a photo of your pet and the Web Address where your pet’s photo can be viewed. Your lost pet Website will allow you to display up to four different views of your pet. In harsh climates, and during winter months, post your flier’s inside to avoid the ravages of weather.

In all advertising, include your pet’s sex, age, weight, breed, color, and any special markings. Also include the circumstances surrounding the disappearance such as date and location. When describing your pet, leave out one identifying characteristic and ask the person who finds your pet to describe it. See “pet scams” below.

Include your contact information in all advertisements and communications, but not your name or physical address. Phone number(s) and email addresses are best.

Place advertisements in newspapers, free online lost-pet databases (petfinder.com, etc.) and with radio stations. Many newspapers, radio stations and online databases provide free assistance. Contact them for help. If you have a local cable channel, some of them will run lost pet ads on their bulletin board. Be sure to include your lost pet Website address for immediate viewing.

As you travel, look for community bulletin boards in shopping centers, churches, synagogues, or anywhere else that you can post a notice of general interest. Also put flyers on the streets at busy intersections (you may want to check the legality of posting on public property first).

Contact local animal shelters and animal control agencies: File a lost pet report with every shelter within a 60-mile radius of your home and visit the nearest shelters daily, if possible. If there is no shelter in your community, contact the local police department. Provide these agencies with an accurate description and a recent photograph of your pet. Notify the police if you believe your pet was stolen.

Additionally, forward your lost pet Web Address via email to all of these agencies. Your email and Website Address will keep the search fresh in their minds, assist their ID process and allow them to easily forward your email to other interested parties who may have information on your lost pet. Keep in contact! Animal shelters and agencies are always understaffed and overworked. Don’t rely on them to remember your pet and call you back. Email them often with your information and your pet’s photographic Website link

Search the neighborhood: The vast majority of the 12 to 15 Million pets lost each year in the USA are recovered within 2 miles of home. Walk or drive through your neighborhood several times each day. Ask neighbors, letter carriers, and delivery people if they have seen your pet. Give them a flier and ask for their help.

Some lost pets have been found in a neighbor’s garage or stuck under a neighbor’s porch. The neighbor didn’t realize the pet was missing and didn’t think to look. Also, talk to store employees in the area where your pet was lost.

Set up a Temporary Outdoor Pet Comfort Station: Leave fresh food and water outside on a porch or in a sheltered area close to your home. Also set up a large cardboard box lined with an old towel or other item that smells familiar to your pet. If your lost pet should return while you are asleep or away from home, food and shelter may save its life. This is also an incentive for your pet to stay close by. Check the box and food supply regularly during quiet evening and early morning hours.

Tomorrow morning, at sunrise: go to the location your pet was lost with a pen and pad. Write down the company name of services making deliveries at that hour. Some examples are bread, milk and newspaper delivery services. Call the dispatch offices for those companies, give them a description of your pet and ask that they alert their drivers. Most pets recovered while still on the street, are found during the quiet early morning hours and then hide when the tempo picks up. If possible, follow up with a flier.

Look for Cats at Night The best time to look for a lost cat is in the dark – between dusk and dawn – when streets are quiet. A lost and hiding cat will come out in the dark to look for food. Take a flashlight with you and search under parked cars, in yards and under bushes as well as in alleys. It’s a good idea to take a friend along at night for safety, and bring some cat food, too, so that you can calm your pet and feed it if you should find it.

If you live in an apartment, be sure to check the hallways, stairwells, basement, storage closets, laundry rooms, and any vacant apartments that may have had a door ajar. Outdoors, don’t forget to look in trees, shrubbery, vacant lots, on porches, and on roofs

Check with all Road Maintenance Divisions Unfortunately, the next most successful way of finding a lost animal is through checking the with the highway departments and the shelters’ dead lists. Even if your pet is wearing tags and the highway maintenance department is supposed to send a list to animal control, you should check with them directly.

There are usually several departments that cover roads in your area. You’ll need to check city or town, county and state roads departments, as well as the animal control agencies. Pictures or a copy of your flier should be left with each department. Again, calling is seldom successful, and actually visiting the department is the best way. You should check back once a week.

Rewards – Opinions Differ Strongly The counsel regarding offering a reward for a lost pet is so varied, that the best we can do is provide a random sample of the most widely held, and differing, views from major pet agencies. It’s your pet, your money and your decision:

Offering a reward may sooth the psyche during the search for a lost pet, however, there appears to be little evidence that rewards make a difference in a lost pet’s return.

Try to offer a reward for you pet if you can and be prepared to pay the reward if your animal is recovered.

If you should decide to offer a reward for the redemption of your lost pet and are fortunate to have found your pet yourself or have encountered a Samaritan who refuses a reward payment, you should consider donating the “reward” money to a local animal welfare organization.

Don’t let your emotions override your common sense. Some “finders” collect a fortune in rewards for lost pets they haven’t found. Protect yourself. Never pay reward money or any shipping costs without viewing at least a clear photograph of the “found” pet.

You may want to initially make posters without mentioning a reward. If you do choose to offer a reward, say “Reward for information leading to the return of.” This gives informants the incentive to call you even if they don’t have actual possession of the pet. Don’t name the amount of the reward at first as that can be added/negotiated later.

Most people will not accept the reward but there are people who would return your pet for money so always keep this as an option.

Large rewards, aggressively advertised will motivate community members. Money is one of the most basic motivators. And, if your pet has been stolen, a large reward will frequently induce the thief to work through a third-party to return your pet. If you can afford it, offer a large reward and publicize it. $1,000 – $5,000.

Place ads in all neighborhood papers distributed in your area. Rewards help but keep it reasonable – $25 to $100

Be wary of pet-recovery scams When talking to a stranger who claims to have found your pet, ask him to describe the pet thoroughly before you offer any information. If he does not include the identifying characteristic you left out of the advertisements, he may not really have your pet. Be particularly wary of people who insist that you give or wire them money for the return of your pet.

Mon Aug 4, 2008 6:49 pm (PDT)

PLEASE, If U are missing your pet: DO NOT just search locally!

There is a group of people who are stealing pets, using them for breeding
(male and female), then dumping them off in different areas, and
different states! They are usually found in very bad condition!

They do not take the time to see if your pet has been fixed!

When they check to see, they either dump them, or try adopting them out in
Different states also! These people remove microchips if necessary!

I believe they may be working with a vet. They are making a profit
from “adopting out” and selling the puppies.

They were thought to only be working out of South Mississippi and Louisiana areas,

but recently pets have been found with microchips from Texas and Florida.

If your pet as been found by someone and turned into a shelter, they could be
euthanized or picked up by a Rescue group and shipped anywhere in the
US or Canada!

PLEASE- CHECK THESE WEBSITES:

NEW to help this cause! http://www.petsandtheft.com/

www.petfinder.com( search breed & gender, it will bring up mixes also)search all results given!
If you don`t see your pet.. keep checking everyday if possible!

Most shelters list new pets everyday.

If your pet has been missing for a long time you can search through most of the shelters

“happy endings” pages to see if someone has adopted your pet already.

PLEASE make sure to check ALL New Orleans shelters, Slidell, and South
Mississippi shelters–Pearl River County(Picayune) , HSSM(Gulfport) ,
and Pine Belt Animal Shelter(Hattiesburg ).

Also check petharbor.com (they list ALL lost pets that come in).

Lycos.com(sign up to receive alerts when someone post a pet like yours).

Oodle.com and puppyfind.com and any other website or listings you can find online.

If your pet wasn`t fixed- keep your eyes open on these websites for
puppies being posted that may look like yours. Make up an anonymous
email and use it to request info and background on them.

REMEMBER: they usually do not breed purebred! They usually cross breed ex.

Pom-chi(Pomeranian/ Chihuahua, Chitzu(Chihuahua/ Shitzu) and so on.

This is so they don`t get caught. They know that usually U will look for just
your breed.

If you have the momma or daddy dog/cat that U are missing,
and you are sure you`ve found a pup/kitten from your dog, you can now
have DNA testing done through a vet or pretty cheap by ordering a kit
online.

Check all Craigslist listings under Lost and Found and Pets
in as Many areas as you can. Especially New Orleans, New York, etc.

I know this is alot of work and very time consuming, but if we can find
ONE pet that can give us a lead to stopping this Organization, then
there will be alot less heartbroken pet owners.

Our pets ARE out there! We just have to find them!

PLEASE help me by cross posting this EVERYWHERE possible!

Question people who advertise needing “Pet Transporters” ,

make them give you descriptions of each pet being
transported to different States and find out What Shelters or Rescue
Groups their coming from! Make sure their owners have been searched
for or they had been posted on petfinder before being transported!

If they`re coming from a Rescue Group, the same rules apply!

There are alot of people unknowingly adopting or pets that do not know they are
stolen, see lost ads and posters and think nothing of it because they
adopted or bought them through an Organization or breeder.

WE CAN STOP THESE PEOPLE!!! CALL or mail a flyer to all airlines that
do pet transporting- give them a detailed description/ pic of your pet
with your phone #.

Forward this post to Everyone you know that has missing pets!

PLEASE HELP ME get this information worldwide!

WE CAN DO THIS, but I cannot do it alone!

Here is a post from Craigslist. This person did get her dog back.

I think this title is not really fit with the ad. The ad is more likely for people who stole a dog or just took in a stray dog. I wrote this when I lost my dog last week and I was sure that my dog was stolen and somebody was keeping her somewhere. Here is what I wrote:

RE: MISSING FEMALE BOXER (WALNUT/SOUTH WEST COVINA)

Most dogs especially full grown dogs will not go so far away from home by herself. If she’s lost around the neighborhood, she must know how to go back home, but if she is taken by a car to completely different area, she will not come back unless she is returned to the area.I cannot understand if someone is keeping a dog that belongs to somebody, that’s same like kidnapping a kid, a pet is also part of the family. That person will not live in peace and the dog will not live happily.

So do the right thing:

1. Go back to the area you found the dog, look for “missing dog” posted around or post “found dog” signs around that area;

2. Give few days if no leads, bring it to the local shelter where you found the dog, not to the local shelter where you live in, let them try to locate the owner, maybe the dog is microchipped;

3. In the mean time have them reserved the dog for you so if in 5 days they cannot locate the owner, then the dog is yours.

Yes, you need to pay the adoption fee to the Shelter but only minimal fee plus they give you health check guarantee for 7 days, rabies shot, spaying/neutering.

But most of all YOU’RE DOING THE RIGHT THING!

Get yourself your own dog rather than keeping somebody else’s dog. There’s a family is crying upon their loss of love ones. Our prayer is for you…

Midwest Theft Ring: *Story on Maggie’s Theft and Recovery

STOLEN THERAPY DOG:

*Story on Maggie’s Theft and Recovery*Good Morning,
Yes she was found on Sunday, 6 days after she was taken.
Law enforcement believe it is a ring of dog thieves
that have been working the Midwest for quite awhile and seem to be very exclusive.

Police were able to link her disappearance to a
complaint in southern Wisconsin of barking dogs and a lot of “night time” activity. From that
complaint they were able to discover the identities
of the two people who matched the description of the ones who took her.

They also got a description of the van.. A dark blue panel van -late 90′s Ford Econoline.
The tag was only a partial IL tag 598-1 ???

From there the trail led to a Flea Market / Swap meet where a different police agency had been gathering info that stolen dogs were being sold..
that lead then developed into some background that
the dogs being sold were distributed from a location in the UP of Michigan.
Yet another police agency involved , and located and abandoned barn with about 200 dog kennels. There was evidence of recent activity in the barn..
From there my husband and I took it upon ourselves
to canvas the area which is pretty darn remote. We spent over 18 hours Saturday afternoon, evening
and on into Sunday driving up and down dirt roads, back into fields you name it we looked there.

Call it Divine providence or intervention but we
happened down a very remote road through a stand of trees and found a dump site piled with kennels.
Our Maggie was there, cold, soaking wet and with some minor injuries.

There was evidence that this location has been used many times before..

Bodies etc in various states of decay. This is an on going investigation so I can’t be more
specific then that until the police wrap things up , hopefully with some arrests.

A little background on the ring itself:
It is believed to be a supplier of dogs to bunchers
who sell to Class B dealers for medical research.

They also are believed to supply bait dogs for dog
fighting rings and Pit Bull pups as well.
The frequently use vans, pick up trucks and small
livestock trailers to transport animals from state to state.
Vans and pickups with camper tops often have the
words “ANIMAL RESCUE” “PET RESCUE” or ANIMAL MANAGEMENT – be aware of these vehicles in neighborhoods cruising looking for dogs.

They frequently work in teams, man & woman, or two men.
